The Carl Sandburg College volleyball team will face a familiar foe in the first round of next week’s NJCAA Division II Championship.

The Chargers (26-17), making their second straight appearance at nationals, were awarded the 12th seed in the 16-team, double-elimination tournament and will take on fifth-seeded Kirkwood (Iowa) (32-8) at 2 p.m. Central on Nov. 15 in Charleston, W.Va.

The winner advances to the quarterfinals at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 15 against the winner of No. 4 South Mountain and No. 13 Moraine Valley. The losers will play in the ninth-place bracket at 11 a.m. Nov. 16.

Sandburg and Kirkwood faced each other Oct. 13 in the Iowa Central Invitational, with the Eagles sweeping the Chargers 25-15, 27-25, 25-17. Sandburg, though, played that match without freshman setter Cora Vyhnanek (Colchester, Ill./West Prairie), who was recovering from abdominal surgery. Vyhnanek ranks 13th in the nation in assists and eighth in assists per set despite missing three weeks because of the procedure.
